An esteemed seven-member delegation from the Parliament of Bhutan, led by His Excellency Sangay Dorji, Hon. Chairperson of the National Council, participated in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its related meetings in Arusha, Tanzania, from 5 to 9 October 2026.
Convened under the theme โ€œEnhancing Good Governance and Empowering Communities through Inclusivity, Trust and Opportunities for All,โ€ the Assembly brought together parliamentarians from across the world to strengthen democratic dialogue, foster international parliamentary cooperation and deliberate on shared global challenges.
During the General Debate, His Excellency delivered Bhutanโ€™s statement, highlighting the importance of good governance, public trust, inclusivity and people-centred development. The address reaffirmed Bhutanโ€™s unwavering commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the values of accountability and advancing the well-being of its people.
Members of the delegation also participated in various IPU forums and meetings, including the Forum of Young Parliamentarians, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians. These engagements provided valuable opportunities to exchange perspectives, share experiences and strengthen collective efforts towards greater youth participation, womenโ€™s political representation, gender equality and inclusive governance.
A significant achievement of Bhutanโ€™s participation was the successful conclusion of its tenure as President of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group (APG), representing 38 countries. His Excellency the Chairperson presided over the Groupโ€™s meeting, further contributing to regional parliamentary dialogue, cooperation and consensus-building. This milestone reflects Bhutanโ€™s constructive engagement and commitment to fostering unity and collaboration among parliaments across the Asia-Pacific region.
The delegation also extended its heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Milton Dick, Honโ€™ble Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, on his election as the 32nd President of the IPU, conveying the warm wishes of the Parliament and the people of Bhutan for a successful and fruitful tenure.
Bhutanโ€™s participation in the 153rd IPU Assembly was an important opportunity to represent the Kingdom on the international parliamentary stage, strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations, and contribute meaningfully to global democratic dialogue. The successful completion of Bhutanโ€™s APG presidency stands as a testament to the spirit of cooperation, mutual respect and responsible leadership that Bhutan continues to uphold in the international parliamentary community.
The delegation expresses its sincere gratitude to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliament and Government of Tanzania, and all partners and colleagues for their warm hospitality, cooperation and support in making the Assembly and its related engagements meaningful and successful.
Guided by the enlightened vision of His Majesty The King, Bhutan remains committed to promoting a democratic culture rooted in trust, integrity, inclusivity and the collective pursuit of peace, prosperity and well-being for all
